If you've finished Prime Video's adaptation of popular video game Fallout, we've got good news and bad news.

The good news is that season 2 has already been green-lit by the streamer – unsurprising, considering season 1 received rave reviews and ranks among Prime's top three most watched titles ever. The bad news is that we'll have to wait to get our hands on it. Easier said than done, considering how that dramatic finale sets things up.

At least we can expect Ella Purnell's Lucy MacLean and the rest of the cast to return. And another epic soundtrack, too.

Creators Graham Wagner and Geneva Robertson-Dworet recently teased what's in store for Lucy, whose next adventure was hinted at at the end of season 1.

"One thing I wanted to say in terms of the season 1, season 2 stuff — watching the discourse about Shady Sands, and the NCR — I really want to caution people [that] the story isn't over yet, and we really bet on that. There's more to tell," Wagner told GQ.

The pair also discussed the location teased in season 1's post-credits scene, which seasoned Fallout players will recognise, and a possible time jump. More on that below.

Fallout season 2 release date speculation

Currently, there's no confirmed release date for Fallout season 2. However, at a guess, we wouldn't expect it any earlier than late 2025.

The renewal likely won't come as a huge surprise to fans, as the creatives behind the show have been open about their hopes of making more.

Executive producer Graham Wagner told Collider: "[When] we wrapped season 1, we started working on season 2 in the hopes of there being interest in that from Amazon, and in the hopes of shrinking that gap [between release dates] – because leaving people on a cliffhanger for two years is a bizarre impulse."

One promising sign came just before the launch of season 1, when the state of California issued a $25 million tax credit to Amazon MGM Studios, which suggested that production was primed and ready should there be a green light.

What could happen in Fallout season 2?

As you'd expect, very few plot details for Fallout season 2 have been made public at this time.

However, the team behind the show has given some hints, including that we could be going to a new location, seeing some of the game's iconic Deathclaws and that things might have happened between seasons.

The post-credits scene certainly hinted that Vegas would be the site of the new season, but creator Wagner told GQ that viewers should expect a twist.

"All we really want the audience to know is that things have happened, so that there isn't an expectation that we pick the show up in season 2, following one of the myriad canon endings that depend on your choices when you play [Fallout: New Vegas]," he said.

Wagner added: "With that post-credits stuff, we really wanted to imply, 'Guys, the world has progressed, and the idea that the wasteland stays as it is decade-to-decade is preposterous to us. It’s just a place [of] constant tragedy, events, horrors — there's a constant churn of trauma'. We're definitely implying more has occurred."

"We wanted to get Deathclaws, but we didn’t want to just throw it away. It’s such a monumental piece," Wagner also told TheWrap of almost including the creature in the first season.

"We want to save some something for season 2 to be able to do it properly, not just added on to the massive world building we had to do already in season 1. So season 2, we’re very excited to finally tackle one of the most iconic elements of the games."

Naturally, fans will also be theorising wildly on social media after that inevitable cliffhanger ending.
