Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Sandra Bullock is a big-shot editor at a New York publishing house who pressures her assistant (Ryan Reynolds) into marrying her to avoid deportation back to Canada. The hitch comes when officials begin to nose around, forcing the pair to cement the lie by spending the weekend in Alaska with Reynolds's family. A gentle, predictable plot is fleshed out with strong comic turns from the two leads, who enjoy the snappy dialogue and share real chemistry. Betty White (TV's Golden Girls) also shines as the matriarch who thinks marriage is just peachy. Nicely directed by Anne Fletcher (27 Dresses), the movie sometimes comes close to the screwball romantic comedies of old.
