Tom Hanks is a troubled man in this tense wartime drama, inspired by the real events of the Battle of the Atlantic in early 1942. He plays naval commander Ernie Krause, who finds himself out of his depth on his first commission protecting the safe passage of merchant ships. His convoy has a weak link in the form of the faulty Greyhound vessel, which comes under attack by a "wolf pack" of German U-boats. The screenplay, written by Hanks and based on CS Forrester's novel The Good Shepherd, intersperses white-knuckle action among the raging waves with the claustrophobic confines of the Greyhound bridge, where Krause wrestles with self-doubt and his anguish over the escalating loss of lives. Dramatically, it's largely a one-man show, with Hanks playing the angst-ridden skipper to perfection, but there's subtle support from Stephen Graham as Krause's second-in-command sounding board.
