Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Frequent Succession director Mark Mylod helms this black comedy that takes aim at the one per cent. Twelve privileged guests arrive on a lavish private island for an evening at a gourmet restaurant run by Ralph Fiennes's celebrity chef. Margot (Anya Taylor-Joy) attends as a plus-one, but the rest of the guests comprise a number of high-society stereotypes: a pretentious foodie (Nicholas Hoult), snooty restaurant critic (Janet McTeer), arrogant tech entrepreneur (Rob Yang) and washed-up film star (John Leguizamo). As the tasting menu begins, Fiennes's chef raises the stakes with each course, and no one knows if the increasingly bizarre theatre that accompanies the food is all part of the experience, or a sign of something more sinister. The satire may be delivered with the subtlety of a rolling pin, but The Menu is never less than entertaining thanks to sizzling performances from a steely-eyed Fiennes, sycophantic Hoult and sleazy Leguizamo
