Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

This follow-up to 2018 creature feature The Meg boasts an unlikely director in British film-maker Ben Wheatley, who is better known for horror-inflected indie offerings such as Kill List and Sightseers. Jason Statham returns as deep-sea diver Jonas Taylor, who this time does battle with even more enormous sharks and a plethora of other prehistoric sea beasts. Any hope that Wheatley might bring some of his earthy style to the film is quickly dashed, and the action is fairly generic throughout - even if it's not without a few surface-level pleasures. But Meg 2's main weakness is the slapdash nature of its plotting. Various characters are set up - from ill-defined mercenary villains to returning faces from the first Meg -without ever establishing a sense of momentum, and the result is a film that darts from one scene to another without much tension. Add in some shoddy CGI work and a barrage of clunky lines, and this is a sequel that's easy to forget.
