How to open eye chest in Hogwarts Legacy: Eyeball chests explained
One simple spell leads to plenty of Gold
Hogwarts Legacy is filled with many tricky puzzles that require the skills of a top wizard to progress.
Some of the most commonly found in the game are Disillusionment Chests, or as they're more commonly referred to: eye chests.
Since finally making its way to Nintendo Switch after initially launching on next-gen consoles earlier this year, millions of Harry Potter fans have been pursuing their own magical journey in Hogwarts Legacy.
In fact, it's one of the best-selling games of 2023, with more than 15 million copies sold. That's not even taking into account Switch sales.
That's a lot of people searching how to open eye chests. And it's well worth doing them, as all 14 Disillusionment Chests contain 500 Gold upon completion – a decent amount of money that can go towards purchasing new gear, potion ingredients and even brooms.

If uncovering new Harry Potter lore in Hogwarts Legacy has brought you joy, then you’ll have the chance to do the same with Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, this time surrounded by a community of other fans in the West End.
How to open Hogwarts Legacy eye chests
To open a Hogwarts Legacy eye chest you will need to use the Disillusionment spell to hide from the box's eyeball, which follows you once spotted. Think Super Mario 64. Opening an eye chest in Hogwarts Legacy is not possible as long as the creature can see you. After it spots you, its eyeball will remain fixed upon you until leaving its line of sight.
When spotting an eyeball chest, cast the Disillusionment spell to become invisible. Perform the spell away from the sight of the creepy chest. If the spell is cast too close, the eye chest will cast its gaze and remain locked. Instead do this out of its gaze, then sneak up and take the reward found within. Doing this correctly will let you open chests whenever you come across one on the map. Since Hogwarts Legacy is quite a long game these can be a nice little distraction from the main story.
How to get the Disillusionment spell
To unlock Disillusionment in Hogwarts Legacy, you need to complete the Secrets of the Restricted Section main story mission. This quest is fairly early into the game, just 10 missions in, with completion likely after just a couple of hours of play if you’ve been focusing solely on the story up until that point.
So, don’t waste any time trying to sneak up on these eyeball chests if you happen upon one before completing the Secrets of the Restricted Section story mission. You won’t be able to open them before reaching this point in the game.
Hogwarts Legacy eye chests rewards
Opening a chest will reward a crisp 500 gold Galleons. With these eye chests scattered throughout Hogwarts and the surrounding areas, you'll quickly earn thousands of gold after opening a few. This should go a long way towards improving your Room of Requirement or saving up for some of the best gear in Hogwarts Legacy.
